- Summary
- The PERTRAS Release Unit includes three tanks of 6.6 l volume (10 kg PFC each) for the release of up to three different PFCs per flight. In total a maximum of 30 kg PFCs can be released per flight The release rate can be set between 0.1 and 500 ml/min with an uncertainty of 2%. The outlet installed in the baggage compartment of HALO uses spray nozzles to disperse PFC droplets with diameters less than 20 m into the aircraft wake where they evaporate.
The PERTRAS Adsorption Tube Sampler includes 64 tubes (1/4 inch) which can be individually selected by 8 multi-position valves. Sample air is passed through the tubes for 30 s and PFC tracer molecules are trapped and concentrated in the tubes onto a molecular sieve adsorbent (Carboxen 569). The volume of air passed through the tubes is recorded. Analysis of the PFC amount in the tubes is performed in the laboratory by Thermal Desorption technique and GC/MS. The detection limit for PFCs is fmol mol-1 (ppqv)
